There are many types of drill bits specialized for different application. In this guide we will try to explain the basic of drill bit so you can select the right drill bit for your application.

Drill Bit Size

Metric dimensioning is generally preferred for drill bits in India. These are M2, M2.5, M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10, M12, M16, M20, M24, M30. These Metric sizes are based on Renard series sequences.

Fractional inch drill bit sizes are still in common use in the United States and in any factory (around the globe) that makes inch-sized products for the U.S. market. Refer Drill bit sizes for detailed chart.

Important note:

  • The size of the drill bit is determined by the dia of the cutting tip.
  • Drill bits and End mills are different DON’T confuse, know more about End mills.

The drill bits are made of different material and coating, we will see some of them in the next section.
