Drill Bit Materials

Published on in Series Basics of Drill Bits

There are may specialized materials for making drill bits, but these are the materials generally used to make drill bits.

  • Carbon Steel
  • High Speed Steel (HSS)

Carbon Steels

Low carbon steel

Low carbon steel is relative inexpensiveness when compared to other materials. They are used to make drill bits for drilling soft materials like wood. They can be sharpened to extend their lifespan. Most of the cheap drill bits are made of this materials.

High carbon steel

Compared to low carbon steels they have better tempers, so no need of sharpening. They can cut both woods and metals.

High-Speed Steel

High-Speed Steel in short HSS is a special type of carbon steel, they can withstand high temperatures while maintaining its structural integrity and hardness. HSS can be used in high-speed drillings. HSS can be coated to give the drill bit better lubricity, decreasing friction. It can drill wood, fiberglass, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and soft metals such as aluminum.
