Top Reasons Filament Jams During 3D Printing

There are many reason for the filament jam to occur, the effect of filament jam during large print is the worst. In this article let us examine the most common reason for the filament jam and their solution.

Active Cooling

Solution: All Metal hotends will need active cooling system, like mini Fan or. Without active cooling the heat at the nozzle creeps up to and filament is starting to soften prior to getting to the hotend chamber. Some hotends (like the E3Dv6) have a fan on the cooling fins.

Extruder motor heats up

The heating up of extruder motor is normally, because it works the most compared to all other motor. Depending on the motor rating it temperature can go up to 100C. This problem occurs mostly with direct drive extruder motor running hot and pre-heating the filament a bit as well.

Solution 1: This can be solved by either installing a fan on the extruder or using a Aluminium heat-sink to keep the motor cool. and jamming went away.

Solution 2: You may be pumping too much current to the motor, use the trimmer/pot on the Step stick to reduce the current.

Quality Filament

Don’t be surprised when that low quality filament from ebay doesn’t print too well. The cheaper filament tends to lack any sort of quality control. Do your research when purchasing filament!

Filament diameter

Inconsistencies in the filament diameter is common. We have seen this issue with even the best of filament brands.

Solution: Clean up manually and cut the inconsistent part on the filament then feed the filament again.

Filament contamination

PLA absorbs more moisture from atmosphere than other filament types. When not in use store filament in ziplock bag, then keep it in a big plastic air tight container. If possible put few silica gel packs.

For drying filament you can use an oven on very low heat or a food dehydrator works well too. (Cut the trays out so that there’s enough height for a spool of filament and it makes a nice dedicated filament dryer.) Too high a heat will melt and make the PLA stick to itself, so makes sure the temp isn’t too hot.

Brittleness is only an issue in certain circumstances - it’s worse with small diameter spools which have a tiny central hub. The larger the hub, the fewer the problems, so only buy filaments in larger pool as much as possible.

Extrusion Temperature is Very Low

Try increasing hot end temperature by 5 degrees C. In my case it probably was due to plastic not being melted enough, which caused the extruder gear to bite the filament. Also if the temperature is less, the extruder will cause tick-tick or tack-tack sound.

Typical extrusion temperature for filament is

PLA: 170C to 200C ABS: 190C to 230C

Extrusion Temperature is Very High

PLA at high temperature will start burning and become dark ash like substance. This over burned PLA will become hard, which will block the nozzle hole.

Solid Blob in hotend’s cold region are create due to large length retraction. Reduce retraction length to lessen this happening. To fix it get a Teflon (PTFE) lined barrel. PTFE helps filament slide smoothly.
